Street Party on West Street

A number of local residents, artists and enthusiasts have formed the West Street Community Group and have been awarded Heritage Lottery funding for a year long project to explore the street’s lost histories. We have found all kinds of fascinating and strange stories, from fisherfolk to champion swimmers, from tattoo shops to a coroners court. Our research includes Oswald Moseley, suffragettes, fancy dress balls, a theatrical store, an aquarium, poltergeists, bell hangers, drunken revellers and the coxswain of the lifeboat. We have uncovered tales of infanticide, drownings, assaults and suicides alongside honours for bravery in rescuing runaway horses and awards for valour in the voluntary fire brigade. Our Street Party is a chance to celebrate the street and its former and current residents and businesses. We will also be launching our free publication ‘The West Street Chronicle’. We hope you will join us for a welcoming afternoon, with free entertainments and refreshments. Donations to OHPS welcome.
